I'm glad you have decided to host a blog about wine. What do you think about Spanish wines? Have you had any special Spanish tastings? If so, what do you like best?

With the grilling season upon us, is the normal pairing of red and white wine still the right way to go? Or is white more popular during the summer? I’m planning an outdoor dinner party and want to get the wine right.

As we say at the WINE C.A.R.T., drink the type of wine you like best when pairing foods for your grilling season party.  However, many people will ask you for your input on how you decided to pair the wines with your grilling specials.  In this case, I would recommend having available a "chilled" aperitif, pinot gris and/or sauvignon blanc, to sip prior to the first course, or, drink these "chilled" whites with a salad.  These "chilled" apertifs are more popular in the summer months.  I always have available a "chilled" lambrusco for those guests who don't like whites and still want a "chilled" apertif prior to indulging in a wonderful summer meal.  I always recommend having available pinot noir, merlot and cabernet sauvignon "slightly chilled" as you will have guests who still only enjoy reds with many of their meals.

Did you know that wine consumption in Europe is falling steadily while imports of wines are growing much faster than exports? Do you care? Share your thoughts with the WINE C.A.R.T. if you can shed some light on this European dilemma.

Have you heard of Perry? It's a pear wine or cider. I heard about it tonight on NPR and it has gained some popularity in Europe with limited import to the US. There are low end Perry (more like cider) and higher end like the French Bordelet's Poire Granit. Apparently Napoleon was a big fan of it. I'm curious to see if it is truly Champagne like.

Yes, I've heard of Tom Oliver's Perry Wine (Cider; 6-8% alcohol which is less than most wines) and I've contacted a local Cincinnati, OH distributor to see if we can obtain a "splash" sampling of this wine at our wine boutique bar in West Chester, OH.  Let me know if you'd like to join us in our sampling.

The French Bordelet's (Bordellos) Poire Granit that you speak of is champagne type bubbles with intense french pear flavor it is my understanding that it comes from the Loire Valley.  The pears come from trees that are nearly 40-50 years old; unfortunately, this champagne style bordello is only available in Calif., Oregon & Washington state.  I'll keep my eye out for you.  Check back in periodically for more info on Perry Wine.

Would love a splash of Tom Oliver's Perry. We live just around the corner and love the shop. I'm the gal you gave the Italy materials to last week. Thanks so much! Helpful in planning our trip.

I tracked down a bottle of the Pear Granit in California. I just had to order it. I found out from the NPR site that it is from 300 year old pear trees in Normandy. I had no idea fruit trees could live so long. Fedex delivered it today and I'm chilling it for my birthday in a few weeks. Happy to share a drink! I love champange and I love pears...I hoping it's something special or interesting.

Chris & Jane, Brief message to let you both know that Bonnie & I really enjoyed our visit to the Wine Cart today. Chris it was great seeing a former co-worker after some ten years.
Jane it must have been nearly 15 years when we first met at a former co-workers house party. Our best for success. Perhaps we may show up Jan 29th for the gathering of more former co-workers. Give Mike & Jim a big hello.
